Update -> 0.2.4 !!

Hello, World! :)

I know it's been a while since my last post, but I had a pretty busy week then. But now I'm back and have had a lot of time to work on Switch Run, so I have a bunch of exciting new updates!

So as promised I've added a bunch of colour schemes! Also thanks to PixelMetalWolf for recommending some colour schemes, and I have tried to include that "green gameboy" colour scheme, even though it's a bit more blue than green :P (I'll upload a picture of it). But in total I've added about 4 new colour schemes!

As I was working on Switch Run I decided to do the "bigger changes" first, so I didn't work on a few things I said I would add last post:

  • More 3d models (for the buttons and obstacles)
  • A better hitbox for the buttons to make it easier to press them
  • A settings panel to mute sounds etc. (maybe in the post after that)

However I have a few comments about those points. First of all, I think I'm going to stick with these basic models I made for the buttons and obstacles, at least for the next few updates as I quite like that simple aesthetic. The bigger hitbox will definitely be added in the next post, and the settings panel will probably come in around 2 posts.

Now for the big changes I've been talking about...

Firstly, I added a score! Yay! :D The score is linked to how far you've rolled in one run, measured in meters. And along with the score I've also added I high score system! :)

Secondly I updated the UI by drawing custom buttons to fit the font, I tweaked the text style a little, and I made the game over screen much better! :P It now shows your score for the run, as well as whether or not you beat your previous high score. There's still a few small changes to be made, especially about the spacing, but that will be added in the next post. Also the "Share" button doesn't do anything yet, it's just the same as the "Retry" button. I'll probably implement sharing much closer to the launch date (still undecided btw :P probably in a few months) after I finish all the gameplay stuff.

And thirdly.... I've gotten rid of coins! :O Yup! Now, instead of coins there are powerups (3d model is a work-in-progress :P) which once you collect a few of them, you will get a major speed boost and smash through obstacles! :D Later on there will be some VFX to highlight this speed boost, as well as a shatter effect for when you smash through the obstacles. To go with this change I've added a VERY basic UI slider to show how close you are to getting the speed boost, but don't worry it will look much better in future versions :P Also I know that the coin text is still there, don't worry it will be gone next time :P (although I might find another use for it... :P)

I think that's about it! Just as a quick recap here is a simple roadmap:

  • Bigger hitbox --> next post
  • Better UI for the powerup --> next post
  • Better spacing for the game over screen --> next post
  • Settings panel --> in 2 posts
  • VXF for the speed boost --> probably in 3 posts

Alright, thank you so much for reading this post! Please feel free to leave feedback on the community topics I've created.

Thanks! :)

Cool to see some progress :) good luck with it all since you seem to have quite a lot in the works with future updates, hopefully you'll get more feedback from more people along the way.

Thanks for the shoutout btw, and don't worry with the "gameboy" style color scheme, it was just a suggestion, so if it doesn't work with your gameplay  just scrap it, could always be dealt with later or have more theme suggestions that would work better :p

Keep up the good work ! cheers :)

Hi! I'm sorry for the late response, it's been a busy week.. :|

Thanks so much for the support! It really means a lot :)

Yeah no prob :P Yeah I know, but it actually turned out pretty well, I'm just sorry I didn't get the chance to upload pictures of it yet, I'm gonna do that today.

Thanks so much! :D Also good luck with Spinner Defender :P You're updating it regularly (unlike me lol), good job! :)

Hey don't worry, real life is improtant, so nothing wrong with late replies :)

from what i see in the screenshots it does turn out pretty well, and its good that you made the interface according to the "minimalist" design you're going for ^^

Also no problem, you're welcome :) though i wouldn't say i update "regularly" more like whenever i can due to either time or how long i can figure out how to fix/implement anything :p

Anyway thanks for your support also, not sure when i'll be able to post the next update on my project but it's in the works XD

True that, thanks :)

Yeah, it looks really good! Thanks, that's what I was going for ^-^

:) I understand lol, but still :P

Yeah, no problem! :D That's ok, but I'm very glad to hear you're still working on it! :)
